Saving Face. This morning after walk I was having my breakfast when I heard news “A Pakistani Film nominated for Academy Award”. I was surprised and quickly switched channel to see it live. At that time award for “Directing” was happening. I stopped for while and checked online if it was already decided for “Documentary Short”, it wasn’t.

Next category “Documentary Feature” and then what I was waiting for and it was live on screen. This was the first time I felt pressure for something I didn’t do but I wanted it to happen. There were five contestants

  1. The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement
  2. God is the Bigger Elvis
  3. Incident in New Baghdad
  4. The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom
  5. Saving faces
From countries who are in the film business with better facilities and environment. My hopes started sliding but I couldn’t believe when “Pakistani” film was announced winner. Hurray!
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy grew up in Karachi Pakistan and attended Karachi Grammar School after which she completed undergraduate studies from Smith College. Then went on to do a double masters in  Communication and International Policy Studies from Stanford University.

Saving Face: A British-Pakistani plastic surgeon works to help women who have been injured in acid attacks, while his patients struggle to come to terms with the aftermath of their disfigurement.
