An iPhone application to control our dreams

Specializing in paranormal phenomena, an English scientist launches an experiment to discover if it is possible to guide the sleepers in their dreams.

Ever dreamed of driving the nightmares of your nights? The psychologist Richard Wiseman believes it is now possible to control our dreams. To implement his ideas, he has helped develop an application called Dream: ON iPhone. The objective of this professor of the University of Hertfordshire is to mobilize thousands of volunteers to participate in a vast experiment to test his theory.

The idea seems simple test. Once the application loads, the person must place his phone on his bed just before sleeping. The psychologist says that the device should be placed near the sleeper to detect when the person is dreaming, that is to say when the body is most still.

The phone is then supposed to start a small music should evoke pleasant scenes, suggesting such a dreamer to walk in the woods or a nap on the beach. The smartphone then triggers a soft ring to wake the person, so she briefly describes her dream.

"Skip a good night's sleep and pleasant dreams to help boost productivity. It is essential for the well being both physically and psychologically," according to the creator of the application.

Richard Wiseman intends to participate in the experience of nearly 10,000 people, at the International Science Festival in Edinburgh, which ends Sunday, April 15. The test results will not be known for some months.

The scientist explains that people who had depression dream more than others and were very often nightmares. "Maybe if their dreams could be improved, it would help," he hopes.
